high school math poem

wala lang... required... kaya gumawa :D

You changed my identity
You became the focus of my heart baby
You made me feel that I was within the depths of infinity
You’ve created my emotions in full velocity

I couldn’t think straight because of you
I plotted in my mind that my feelings for you has no negative value
I thank you for you’re the origin of my blissful view
I know now the feeling of love that is true. It’s all because of you

We are likened to an equation, still commensurate, all for one, one for all
We are lucky to be in the angle of inclination, all rise, no fall
We have a point of intersection, your smile, my call
We form a continuous function; with my persistent heckle and with your love that isn’t null

The love that we have for each other has a constant sum
The ecstatic events in our relationship that we are in is increasing because we aren’t dumdums
The love that we have are multiplying and are making constant sums
The closeness that we have is unbreakable for we maintain a strong bond.

YOUTHFUL VOICE IN AN ANGRY SEA OF APATHY AND DISBELIEF
Written by: Herdy L. Yumul

ERAP RESIGN! ERAP RESIGN!

Three years ago, in the year 2001, our voices were heard, loud and clear for the world to know that after all, we, the youth, have enormous power to change the course of history.

Yes, sometimes, you may see us, young people, who compose over 40% of this country’s population, getting engrossed with mundane and trivial pursuits, like malling, Friendster or Ragnarok online, but, in my short talk this morning/afternoon, allow me to show you what many don’t see.

Ladies and Gentlemen, my countrymen:

How many times have we heard people say, “Kahit sinong maupo diyan, wala namang mangyayari.” Whoever is elevated to power, nothing will change, it will be as inept, corrupt, and abominable as ever.

Where and how do we, young people, stand amidst this scenario?

In my short speech this afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to offer you three important insights:

First, the realization that the youth is the now. Second, that the youth, in order to make a difference, must be brave, uncompromising, and eternally watchful. And third, that this nation’s citizens always deserve the kind of government they have.

On to my first point. We, the youth, are the here and now. I feel uncomfortable whenever they refer to us, the youth, as the future. The youth is the hope of the fatherland, so the great Filipino Jose Rizal said. “The youth is the hope of the Fatherland… The youth is the hope of the Fatherland. I have heard this over and over… more than a hundred times, it has become a cliché, a cliché that to me begins to sound nauseating. People always say that we are the future. I say that we are the present.

The choices that we make, the paths that we take are of immediate significance and impact in our current state of affairs.

How can I, as a young man, do my share in attaining good governance?

We begin by clean, honest, and enlightened elections. The youth are the antidote to traditional politicians who suck this nation’s blood dry. And who are these traditional politicians? These are the people who use the five Gs to pursue their own selfless and mindless ends. Guns, goons, gold, girls, and even God. Shame! Shame! Furthermore, I urge you, ladies and gentlemen, not to vote for any politician who kisses babies in public, and uses young people in cheap political propaganda.

We must urge politicians to present their platforms of government. We must listen to what they say, and, more importantly, to what they do not say.

Let us join volunteer groups that aim to protect the integrity of the ballot. Let us proclaim the gospel of responsible voting.

But elections are only the start, and this leads me to my second point, that the youth, in order to make a difference, must be brave, uncompromising, and eternally watchful. “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing,” said Edmund Burke. Putting this statement in the Philippine political context, we ask: Who is evil? And who are the good men? Truth is, you do not need to be a politician to be evil, and your veering away from politics never guarantees your being a good man.

We must constantly remind our politicians and government servants that a public office is a public trust. We ought to remind them of the very nature of sovereignty, that power emanates from the people. Let us hold them accountable for everything that they do, or not do.

Third point, we only get the government that we deserve.

Too bad, almost every Filipino demands good governance, but not a few are unwilling to pay for the price.

Sociologist Randy David observes: The foreign master is gone; yet the government continues to be treated like an alien power. We still regard the public sphere as if it were not our own collective responsibility. We treat our country as if it were not our own. We remain minimalists in everything that we do, especially when it concerns our duty to the community. We tolerate shoddiness and incompetence in government or in the market, wrongly believing this is all that we can purchase with our citizenship or money. We regard as fools those who work at perfecting their craft in order to give pleasure to others, instead of making this available only to those who can pay.

Many people continue to paint a bleak scenario for the Philippines, and not a few embrace an escapist attitude. How else can you explain the phenomenal increase in the number of nursing students in the country today? How else can you account for the growing number of Filipinos leaving the country by the hour? They leave the country and intend to come back if, and only if, the mess that they so abhor, is fixed by those who are left behind. It is as if they say: The Philippines is in a sick state, government is a disaster, I better leave. Fix it, and maybe I’ll come back.

And yet, this country, which has some distorted sense of values label those who leave “as modern day heroes.” I protest! We admire the courage of Overseas Filipino Workers, but they are not heroes! They are but victims of circumstance. If they resuscitate the economy with their dollar remittances, it is only incidental. An OFW goes abroad for personal reasons, and not for the national interest. Heroes are those who are brave enough to stay, and make a difference.

I am a nursing student. When I get my license, I will stay, go to the remotest of barangays and offer my services to those who need it most. I will do my share in making my government work. You say that I am just one. I say that I am one. One who can make a difference.

Young people of this great land, unite!!! We have nothing to lose but the tyranny of our own selfish selves!

In the last six minutes of my speech, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have articulated that we, the youth, are the here and now; brave, uncomprising, and eternally watchful; moved by the spirit of responsible citizenship to attain the government that we deserve.

I am a Filipino. I love my country. And I am fully aware that such love, as with any kind of love that is noble and true, demands sacrifices. I am willing to pay the price. I decide to pay the price.

Good afternoon and a meaningful season of hearts to everyone.

Feasible Solutions to Obtain Social Change - by me

During the past three decades of the Philippines, we have seen discernment and faultiness of the Philippine presidents. Instead of progressing, our country becomes degraded and pitiable. These are problems that struck the Philippines, these would not kill us but it would definitely lead to our success if we don’t give up and stay put in this country to spar with it and to overcome its struggles. The problem is Filipinos have lost hope so they leave our country to search for greener pastures.
This essay would present more or less the most suitable solutions/ changes that could reverse the current situation in the Philippines, and the pro’s and con’s of each. The ultimate question now is which would we choose?
Our country bombarded with problems; the economy is nearing bankruptcy, high taxes, poverty is unfixable, Edsa revolutions are unending and government officials are corrupt. My predilection is do we still have the possibility to bring about social change? Moreover, where and how do we begin? After the revelation of the essays provided to help us in this resolution, it makes me think and realize that I am an irresponsible citizen that instead of helping, I act as a deviant of society, which worsens the current status of our god-forsaken country. After a lot of weeks of nerve-wrecking brainstorming on the right solution to our main problem, I recall a statement during our oral communication class that was stated by Mr. Herdy Yumul which goes like this, “We always blame the government, we always blame the church, we even blame the Communist for our society’s ills, but isn’t it time we begin asking ourselves what we can do for our children and our children’s children? Think about it, think about it.” The answer is right there, ourselves, before other people we must bring about change in ourselves first, we should not blame other people for all the damnations, we should set all of these aside and think on possible ways in order to change this pathetic country of ours. It is quite shameful that our dear country became like this, an insect being stepped on by superior countries, larger animals all over the world, to think that we have rich natural resources and globally competitive people. It is quite ironic, we were once one of the richest countries back in the seventies then we are now one of the poorest, a third world country. It is quite nauseating to hear the feebleness of our country over and over. We are subjects of humiliation of the fortunate lands of this damned world, the last joke I heard was from an American stating that our country has the new world record of one hundred meter dash, when our madam president pulled out our people from Iraq. It makes me think a lot on what my future would be in this country. I don’t really intend to leave this country because I want to be a teacher of the future generation but our situation is getting worse by the hour. A lot of people leave our country, stating they will only come back when all are fixed. It is not right for these people to leave the country just like that just because of our condition. The state of affairs makes me more inclined to this decisions, the pressure is getting to me, it makes be decide whether to continue this course or not, to leave or not. It creates such a dilemma for most of the people, to be nationalistic and stay hoping for the country to overcome all its tribulations or leave the country in search for better lives, more pay and less problem. The latter is quite tempting but the earlier is quite impractical, as most people say but in my case I still want to pursue my dream but I want to help my parents so my plan is to work there for at least five years, then return here to teach most probably high school students, most likely on biology but I wont encourage them to take up nursing for I know there is still great hope for our country.
I tried to search for more solutions and the second is making the digital future in the Philippines, preventing corruption especially regarding money matters, it would be so nice to see the businesses of the Philippines in a fast pace, computers govern all, instantaneous communications and connection, finished products at an instant, everything is leading to the higher standard of living. Everything has its pro’s and con’s, as Michael J. Miller (PC Magazine, September 2000) puts it; it’s foolish to think the potential outcomes are all positive. He also stated that although all would be digitized, there would be adverse effects on employees especially in the case of a factory worker, people with a minimum wage, if you fire him and replace him with a machine, what would become of him and his family? Even though it will be beneficial to many because the wage would be higher for those who are left but the father of the family that lost a job would suffer the most. Add to that, digitizing everything especially in the government is definitely costly. There is also inequality for those who have the funds for they would be the only ones who will have access to the so-called information. Thus making the balance of the government and governed very unstable. The picture created by this is discrimination especially to the less fortunate. Another, the privacy and individuality of prominent people would be put to peril for their ideas, identities, photos are found online. Also, we cannot prevent hackers from waging their scheme most likely when a politician is supporting them. In addition to digitizing everything would lead to the failure of voting properly, mass media have favorable help to politicians, it creates landslide victories for its costumers; an instance is the television add of Mr. Palengke, Mar Roxas and Jamby Madrigal who appears to be the best friend of Judy Ann Santos; all of this people reached the senate because of the overexposure to mass media. The government is a big nuisance and influence in all of our lives. We are restricted by the laws created by the government in everything we do and everywhere we go, directly and indirectly, given these situations, crossing the street- follow the pedestrian lane and avoid jay walking and purchasing food- value added tax. There are also five crucial transformations in the Digital Age that are rooted in the internet that will affect governance according to Carlos Bueno in his essay The Digital Future: Ready or not, It’s here. Lets start off with Globalization: it does not only mean our interdependence in our economy but also emerging global culture; Internationalism: world changes in all major fields which are addressed to multilateral organizations; Devolution: local government responsibilities such as community demand and fiscal pressures; Marketization: governments are seeking various solutions to manage fiscal issues and public assets; Digital citizens: most powerful communication tools, information with connected citizens which demands the participation of the government. These transformations are not solely the keys to develop the government, with this five empowerment is also needed. Empowerment has political, social and economic aspects. Politically, our government can be empowered by the people of the Philippines. Socially, the government would be empowered by strengthening and enforcement of the responsibilities of all the people. Economically, the government should give importance to projects that would benefit the welfare of the people.
The Censors by Luisa Valenzuela states, we should always remember our goals and that is to promote social change in our country, in the current condition of the Philippines, many starts and ends like Juanito and end up being killed. They start out good but end up forgetting what they are supposed to do. Its just like, you start off as an office clerk, did your job, impressed the boss and you get promoted, fought struggles, until such time that you became the boss, your main goal is to promote camaraderie and organize your clerks, it gets to the point that you tend to hurt your members, doing your job properly, most likely, too much, thus they begin to hate you, and most probably, they would end up killing you because of you wickedness or rather your too perfect performance. We must always be firm with your goals and stay focused and not forget what we are opted to do in the first place.
Another possible solution is that accepting the fact that we created the government that we have now. Elizabeth Colson remarked, “the societies we study are stream of time, rather than a stable environment whose dimensions can be securely plotted… once and for all” Add to that, the idea of Randy David why we have bad leaders, recall the time of Marcos, Aquino, Ramos, Estrada and Arroyo isn’t it darn painful to remember such memories that caused a lot of conflicts, death and dismay to the country? Marcos stole the biggest amount of money in the world during his reign as president of the country, moreover Imelda, his wife who owned more or less 500 pairs of branded shoes, and designer gowns, building useless establishments that summed to millions of pesos, an example of which is the film center, martial law, unlawful imprisoning of people and the like. This is the cause of the high debts that we are continually paying, also the lack of good judgment for those imprisoned during this period. There are also good things that happen during this era like the building of the San Juanico bridge which connects Samar and Leyte, also the Cultural Center of the Philippines which serves as venues for concerts and anything that involves the performing arts and The Philippine Heart Center, the promotion of family planning. After what happened, we Filipinos are still forgiving and inconsistent. These are the reasons why we stay this poor up to now, we forgive almost all the politicians of all the darn things that they have done and to think that we nearly killed them during their era, and also we are inconsistent, we have this attitude of changing the mood. If a personality creates a mistake, we will just forgive them, as time would pass by. During the time of Cory Aquino was a disaster, yes she saved us form Marcos but hell who cares, her works were not enough, the U.S. bases were in the Philippines, someone stronger and more capable should have taken over. The sole thing that she did that made me hate her is that she told the U.S. that she would pay all the debts of the Philippines, where will she get all the money to pay that huge amount? Why not just be meek and accept that we can’t pay it, swallowing our pride instead of being proud, stating that we can pay. I can’t imagine the amount of my grandchildren’s debt in the future. This is also a plus factor in the worsening the economic situation of the Philippines. This was the shameful episode of our country, consolidation of Aquino after the time of Marcos. This reminded me of Karl Marx, the classless society that he suggested, quite a good solution but quite impractical. In Fidel Ramos time, we rarely see our president in our country for he is always in another country for a conference and the like but one thing that made me admire him is his capacity to make peace talks happen, it was really peaceful during his era. Muslim and Christian relation was quite a blast. Joseph Ejercito Estrada, the maker of all the Eraptions because of his carabao English. He was the impeached president due to his faults in the government like his hidden wealth, grand mansions, gambling exposes and bank accounts that was taken out of nowhere. You see how conceited he is, to think there are a lot of poor people in this country. Although that was the case, during this era, our peso – dollar rate was quite stable but flunked during the impeachment trial of Estrada. The Edsa Dos took place in this epoch and this how showed the pathetic Filipinos can become, the Edsa revolutions followed and appeared as humdrums, coping mechanism that would let a president resign from his post if ever he does something wrong. As Randy David said, we end up having bad leaders because we are celebrity oriented, vote buying is still prominent, we also allow politicians prey on impoverished individuals who need money so they sell their vote just to buy their things. In addition to this we patronize trapos, traditional politicians and charismatic ones rather than finding a bureaucratic politician that is described by Max Weber as the model of modern leaders. Usually trapos are a government official who uses wealth to buy power exploitation of poverty through patronage, treating public funds like his own property. The era after which was the reign of the acting president GMA who was sworn to office due to the Edsa Dos. Her time quite improved but Erap supporters barraged the Malacañang Palace and the Edsa Tres was born, these supporters hated the administration because their idol was imprisoned. The clash of the groups is still the main reason why our recent presidential elections slowed down, a group supported GMA and the other Fernando Poe Jr.
I also read the Powerless Public by Randy David which is definitely a double yes in bringing about social change, and he states here that we lack civility, the art of living with others, businessmen usually remain unmindful of others just to have money. An example of which are the malls being put up by these companies not thinking about the monstrous traffic that it creates when a lot of people flood that place during their leisure time. There are coping mechanisms that could overcome these shortcomings but quite impractical. We have the democratic form of government; they need to hear what we have to say before making a decision especially if it really concerns our well being. They say we have control over our country but I say we haven’t for we solely rely on these measly politicians who decides alone and does not listen to the side of the people during decision making. We are a powerless pubic, living in a lie, not practicing our right to help in managerial process of these local and national problems. I have to say that before they pass a bill regarding the 2-year public service that the nurses should encompass in the Philippines before they leave the country, they must ask all the people concerned. In relation to this, I recall the experience of the dear sister of Mr. Yumul in his article, Teaching Philosophy who worked in public service, but left the country. Her actions were justifiable after all that happened in our country. The reason why Filipinos leave this country is that they are tired of having people decide for themselves, thus limiting what they do and preventing them to grow and prosper. The growing number of nursing students proves that and also people leaving the country by the hour these people go to other countries to work as a domestic helper. They leave and find work not related to their finished course rather than waiting for a shower of jobs to come after getting no vacancy signs when they apply for a job appropriate for their course. A real product of migration is the OFWs who work in other countries, earn money and buy tricycles of jeeps with stickers like, katas ng Saudi and the like, this states that it was purchased because of the hard work of that certain individual in that particular place. Come to think of it, I have never seen anything like katas ng Pinas, it would be good to see that, and an improvement to the Philippine society I may say. Life is unfair really but probably if you were one with an instant productive asset as mentioned by Serafin Talisayon in his essay, Starbucks at Rural Santa Rosa: Transformation from the Inside Out probably you would not complain, for you got an asset because of your inheritance, imagine you would did not waste and sweat for it, an accident of being born in a rich family.
The last key for social change to happen is discipline of every individual of this planet. You cannot bring about change when the person does not want to have social change; it is his prerogative if he wants to act good or bad, help or act as a deviant. You can change his views but decisions that he makes is entirely up to him. There are a lot of deviants including me, not following rules especially the so-called sacred ones, and it is my choice to do it for I believe it will benefit me. Violating laws is what I am fond of, but I realized that when we start to be more disciplined and more concerned we shouldn’t have been ridiculed by Claire Danes when she visited our country. If the people around were become more vigilant, removed the cockroaches crawling around, we wouldn’t have any hated actress who mocked our country. I have been thinking, if My Yumul had asked his question, who wants to be a Filipino?, most probable thing that would happen is that more would agree than the survey before.
Social change is entirely up to us, in addition to that, a little bit of nationalism. For my fellow nursing students who were just persuaded to take up nursing, pursue your own dreams for the Philippines can make it, with your help. As for me, I’ll try to find a job in this country that would fulfill my needs, if there is no hope, I’ll leave but definitely ill come back in order to stop the economy from sinking. The Philippines still has a chance, let us work hand in hand in making our government and country work.

I need to post this again. I don't want to loose the essays that I wrote nung bibo pa ako. hehehe

A Reaction To Who Wants To Be A Filipino? - by me

At the first glance of the essay, I was quite shocked to see an author who isn’t proud to be a Filipino. Quite an ungrateful person, I thought to myself, but I realized his correctness, he mentioned the Philippine’s current state of affairs, it is pathetic; add to that there are growing number of Filipinos leaving the country by the hour; quite drastic to hear and witness the increase in the number of nursing students. Their sole reason is that our country has no chance in achieving its position in the past, the bonafide country that was once the richest in the Southeast Asia.
I never had a clue on the reason why Mr. Yumul wrote this essay, random thoughts just flowed through my mind hoping that this is the real reason why he disseminated these ideas to us. I was in 4th year high school when I read this essay of his in Bakit baliktad magbasa ng libro ang mga Pilipino? I was completely ignorant about him, so I was not really sure if my realizations were correct or not so here goes, I thought that he was just a Filipino who is tired of the damnations that this country is suffering so he wanted to voice out his sentiments to people concerned making a sound in the written industry. Another insight is that he was trying to unify the people by giving immersed criticisms that could truly cause a lot of people to fuse, curse him and be nationalistic.
I was lucky enough to encounter him on campus (Trinity College of Quezon City) when I heard a rumor that there was this terror professor who was a writer and who assigns a lot of tasks to his students, when I asked who this professor was, they anxiously said, “Yumul”. I’ve heard this surname before but I can’t put my fingers to it until he became my oral communication professor last summer. At the first meeting he assigned homework already, darn I was so stupid, that was the only time I realized that he was that writer who tried to barrage that nationalism of Filipinos, who is also became a nuisance to St. Louis University in Baguio when he wrote his essay, A Budding Atheist. Add to that, a professor who doesn’t approve of nurses leaving the country. He is not that ghastly, sarcastically I compare him to a suture that tries to mend the minds of those taking up nursing, making them realize what they really want. Quite dire but the demand for nursing drastically killed the future accountants, lawyers, doctors, and computer engineers. Now I realized that he just wanted in his essay is to preserve nationalism, making the gaps between doing what you really want and what you should want, in making our government and country work.
In all of his essays he never fails to mention this topic, nationalism. So for those who thought of him at first as a conceited, ungrateful idiot, think again; you are a victim of his scheme; he fooled you making you believe that he was anti-Filipino although his purpose was quite difficult to maneuver. Only a genius could do that, Herdy Yumul is a true mastermind.

I was uber bibo. hehehe To think I was able to come up with such reaction.

I am bored. I found myself googling people's name including myself

and I stumbled upon my old tabulas blog. :D hmm I'll post some of the good ones here.

Who wants to be a Filipino?

by: Herdy L. Yumul

If you were to be reincarnated and given the choice, would you opt to be Filipino again? It was in 1998, at a Forum of students of top schools at the University of Asia and the Pacific, that I raised this question. As expected, everybody, except me, gave a resounding yes for an answer.

Hypocrites! I could see from the way they talked, from the clothes they wore, from their ideas of what was good and beautiful, that even in this lifetime they were dying to camouflage their being Filipino. Thanks to Ralph Lauren, a colonial education and a "trying-hard" American accent.

I told them that I want to be European, a Frenchman more specifically. Yes, Europe--with its rich history, solid identity, and all the luxury and elegance this world could offer.

I have been there once for the world debates in Greece. But being Filipino, I was a disaster then. During socials, I would befriend the Jamaicans so I would stand out. But it was a wrong move because Jamaicans, notwithstanding their darker skin tone, are very secure with themselves.

When I and fellow Filipinos were walking in downtown Athens, a young Greek approached our group and casually told us that he intended to go to the Philippines to f--k Filipinas. Then he kept on asking us: "How much are Filipinas?"

Did he expect us to adore him because a fine European like him wanted to visit a country whose people they officially defined as Domestic Helpers? Or was he simply being mean? I wish he were just referring to the controversial brown biscuit.

Hellish traffic, hellish climate, hell-sent politicians, gangsters in uniform, hoodlums in robe, massive unemployment, inhumane poverty, identity crisis, a tradition of mediocrity. Get real. Who would want to be Filipino? Maybe the Cojuangcos, the Sys, the Tans and the other demigods whose surnames do not sound Filipino at all. But this Yumul, no.

My Uncle Jessie is lucky: he and the whole family migrated to the United States in the early 1970s, to graze where the grass is greener and live there as second class citizens but occasionally come home like gods crowned with sparkling dollars.

Then there is Me-Ann, one of the tinderas in our small business. She thinks that her main purpose in life is to go to Taiwan and earn money she will never earn in a lifetime of labor in the Philippines. I feel sad to know that Me-Ann and millions of Filipinos have to leave the country just to live decently. Some say though that despite our material poverty, we could take pride in our spirituality since the Philippines is the only predominantly Christian country in Asia. But it continues to puzzle me why this Catholic Nation has only produced two saints so far while Thailand, Japan and China--all non-Christian countries--have more. Maybe, unlike Filipinos, people from those nations have more sensible things to do than creating miracles by desperately looking for images in the stains of tree trunks and forcing statues to shed bloody tears.

I have always been pessimistic about the fate of the Filipino. But there was a break. I gave in to the Nationalistic Spirit during the Centennial Celebrations. When fireworks, worth millions of pesos, lit up the skies over the Luneta, I had high hopes that the Philippines would be better and I decided to junk my pessimism. I thought a new era of Filipino pride had dawned.

In my college years, I was also influenced by San Beda's thrust of molding young men in the image of a true Filipino like some of its alumni whose ranks include Ninoy Aquino, Rene Saguisag, Ramon Mitra, and Raul Roco, who should have been the president of this country.

Yes, for some time, I was deluded into being proud of being Filipino. Thanks to President Erap, I have recovered my senses. His Excellency has betrayed the people's trust so many times that I need not elaborate. Erap has become for me the symbol of everything that is bad in the Filipino. In his administration, corruption and chaos have become the norm so that writing about it would only bore the reader. It's just too bad for the nation but good for me since I got back my precious pessimism.

Now I am firmly convinced that Erap has to resign to save what is left of our dignity as a nation and what is left of my optimism as a young man. But, I guess he will never do that. Congress is dominated by honorable galamays, impeachment is an impossibility. A military coup could save the day for the country, but, in that case, Uncle Sam is sure to defend his friend who handed him the Visiting Forces Agreement. Now, we are left with assassins to play heroes. If one saves the lives of millions, would he not go to heaven? But then Erap need have no fear about an assassination plot. Imelda, despite all the crimes her family committed against the Filipino people, has never been hurt. Not even a strand of her regal hairdo has been touched. But of course, there are always firsts.

According to Hindu philosophy, what you sow in this life, you would reap in the next and whatever you are now is a reaction to your past. Could it be that all Filipinos were crooks in their earlier incarnations? If there is any reason why I try to do well in this life, it is in the hope that in my next, I would be a Filipino no more.

If it would not be too much to ask, I wish I would be French, or even Jamaican, before Jinggoy Estrada becomes president of this wretched land.

humdrum

What do you get when you are not yet sleepy and you have in your background, sana dalawa ang puso ko by Janno Gibbs? You get me, writing this blog entry full of rants. It has been awhile since I have written a blog entry that is made by me. Not a series of questions, not an article that is copy pasted, not even a song lyric. I am currently munching Vcut potato chips onion and garlic flavor while listening to my ever loyal Pompom, its all in one tool; a lightsource, electric fan, clock, mosquito killer, AM/FM radio. I haven't changed the station since last night, I was just suprised that my Hit fm station turned to star fm. Anyway, going back. I thought of yesterday as a normal one, procrastinating all day, fixing my bro's uniforms and the like. Just then, I tuned in to hit fm. By the way, this station was previously the 99.5 RT. It was around 12 that time, in time for my only TV program that I watch, Game KNB. Just then, It was the you pick the hit show. I was not lucky enough to call via the hotline due to continuous number busy tone. Well anyway, there was this promo in which, if you are the 10th texter, you win 2 tickets to the advance screening of American Gangster. I didn't have any idea about this movie, just then, I felt the urge to text. Then, I sent the details that enable me to join the contest. After thirty minutes or so, my freaking name was announced. Geez, I didn't expect getting anything since I am not lucky enough to be picked as their caller to request my song. Talk about turn of tables, just then, they instructed me to get the ticket at their station in Boni.

I asked my parents if I could go to the advance screening, but to my dismay, they refused. Since, I am more of a pasaway, I wanted to see the ticket, I went out and got the ticket. Actually, I did not intend to watch from the very beginning due to the fact that it was not my type of movie plus in addition to that, my ever kill-joy brother refused to see the movie with me. I really wanted to have the tickets. (O.o Good life - Kanye West on the background) Plus I felt the sudden surge of adrenalin to go to the Paragon building where the uber famous brewrats perform their show. (If you don't know anything about brewrats, read previous entries please.)
That is how impulsive I become when I am really bored. Plus I miss commuting via MRT, LRT and bus. I haven't been around lately.

When I was in Kamias, my brother called me, he said, he was waiting in the 24 hour convinient store, then as I dashed to the store, I passed by the restaurant beside it offering coffee, cheap ones which are trying to imitate the starbucks type coffee. I thought, I'll ask bro to eat there. He agreed, after I told him about it. We ate tocilog plus coffee of course.

When we got home, *he* texted. Asking why I called. Actually, I didn't call, while my phone was my in my bag, I was a bit magulo, so, it dialled his name. Then, I replied, it was not sent. Message barred it said. OMG, my 2 month unregistered unlimited text life is now officially finished. Yes people, I enjoyed my FREE unlimited services for two months, November 16 2007 til January 22, 2008. I was enjoying, texting without worrying about my load for 2 lucky months. Now, its all gone. Back to the real world.

My brother tried to piss me off by singing things such as, Ganyan talaga ang buhay, Sayonara Unlimitxt Bye bye and the like. I was not pissed. I don't really know why. Though he was very persistent, I was not at all pissed. Now the internet connection is not going pretty well, I have to use the old school dial up.

What would happen later? I am wondering. I would just like to say one more thing, oist umuwi ka na.... anong petsa na. hehehehe :D

Favorite Song of the moment: Rule 1: Wag mong aaminin by Overtone

Rule 1: Wag mong aaminin by Overtone

Kamusta na? Tagal nating di nagkita

Ay, oo nga. Nu'ng 'sang araw lang pala
May Kasama ka na ba ngayon?
Ba't di muna tayo magkwentuhan? Sasamahan ko pa ng inom

Parang may iba sayo ngayon

Kampay muna. O, ano na bang balita?
Away na naman? O, bakit ba ganyan?

Good health rests on a good night's sleep

Last Updated June 11, 2007

Without sleep, you become more susceptible to health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression. (CBC)

If you're having trouble sleeping, you're not yawning alone. An estimated 3.3 million Canadians age 15 or older have problems getting enough sleep – and that may be affecting their health and quality of life.

The 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey found that just under one-fifth (18%) of these people average less than five hours of sleep a night. This lack of shut-eye makes them more susceptible to health problems.

A September 2006 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine looked at the link between sleep and health.

"The theme that emerges throughout this issue is that sleep serves as an indicator of health and quality of life," guest editors Dr. Phyllis Zee and Fred Turek of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago wrote.

How to get a good night's sleep

  • Keep a regular schedule. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, including weekends.
  • Good habits, like eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, can help you sleep. Don't exercise within a few hours of bedtime.
  • Avoid napping during the day.
  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol can interrupt sleep, leading to a poor quality of sleep. Those who smoke have more difficulty getting to sleep and wake up more often at night, compared to non-smokers.
  • Take some time to relax and unwind before going to bed. Develop a sleep routine. If you do the same things before you go to bed each night, it will train your body to get ready for sleep.
  • Make sure your room and bed are conducive to sleep. If you're not sleeping well, it may be time for a new mattress. Your bedroom should be dark, cool and quiet.
  • Make sure your stomach isn't too empty or too full before going to bed.
  • If you're having difficulty sleeping, get out of bed. Go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel sleepy. Worrying about falling asleep actually keeps many people awake.
  • If your thoughts keep you awake, try getting up and writing them down.

If you're still having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. You may have a medical condition that's affecting your rest. Also, check if the medications you're taking have an effect on your sleep.

The importance of sleep

Researchers looked at how lack of sleep may affect the immune system. Chronic sleeplessness may harm the immune system, since lack of sleep is linked to an increase in cytokine molecules that control immune response.

The resulting inflammation and changes in blood chemistry may be behind a variety of diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and neurological conditions.

"The foundations of good health are good diet, good exercise and good sleep, but two out of three doesn't get you there," said Dr. Anne Calhoun, a neurology professor at the University of North Carolina.

Sleep is important in maintaining your health, say experts. Without it, you become more susceptible to health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression.

One study on more than 1,400 middle-aged adults over four years found those with sleep apnea, in which the airway becomes repeatedly blocked and sleep is interrupted, were twice as likely to develop depression.

Physicians treating people for depression should address poor sleep habits, Zee said.

A French study of nearly 600 people found a higher rate of sleep problems and daytime sleepiness among allergy sufferers, compared with a controlled group of people of the same age and sex who lived in the same area.

"The results show a significant impact of allergic rhinitis on all dimensions of sleep quality and, consequently, a lower quality of life as reflected by more somnolence [sleepiness], daytime fatigue and sleepiness, and impaired memory, mood and sexuality," Dr. Damien Léger of Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris and colleagues wrote.

In the same issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, other studies concluded that men with diabetes and men with short or poor-quality sleep tended to have less control of their blood-sugar levels.

Skimping on sleep increases hunger

In 2004, researchers at the University of Chicago discovered that sleep loss could reduce the body's ability to regulate hormones that control hunger. This could lead to an increase in appetite and a preference for high-carbohydrate foods.

Research subjects who slept only four hours a night for two nights had an 18 per cent decrease in leptin, a hormone that tells the brain there is no need for more food, and a 28 per cent increase in ghrelin, a hormone that triggers hunger. "It provides biochemical evidence connecting the trend toward chronic sleep curtailment to obesity and its consequences, including metabolic syndrome and diabetes," said Eve Van Cauter, professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, in a press release.

As hunger increased in the research subjects, their food choices changed. After two nights of diminished sleep, the volunteers found foods such as candy, cookies and cake far more appealing than fruit, vegetables or dairy products.

"We don't yet know why food choice would shift," Van Cauter said. "Since the brain is fuelled by glucose, we suspect it seeks simple carbohydrates when distressed by lack of sleep."

Modern society seems to have forgotten the importance of sleep, according to Van Cauter.

"We are all under pressure to perform, in school, at work, in social and professional settings, and tempted by multiple diversions. There is a sense that you can pack in more of life by skimping on sleep. But we are finding that people tend to replace reduced sleep with added calories, and that's not a healthy trade."

Another study, presented at a conference sponsored by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine on June 11, 2007, suggested that people who don't get enough sleep are less likely to cook their own meals — and more likely to rely on restaurants and fast-food outlets for some of their meals. The study suggested that that could lead to weight gain or other nutrition-related problems.

How much sleep is enough?

Experts say the amount of sleep varies from person to person. In general, most adults need about seven hours of sleep per night. Children and adolescents need even more - around nine or 10 hours each night.

The best measure of how much shut-eye you need is how you feel when you wake up. If you feel well and are energetic, then you likely had a good night's sleep.

Other research presented at the conference suggested that children who don't get enough sleep or suffer from sleep disorder symptoms are more likely to have trouble academically. Another study suggested that it's a good idea for airport baggage screeners to get a good night's sleep. The study found that sleep deprivation might impair the ability of baggage screeners to detect potentially dangerous items. It didn't affect the speed at which they were able to work, but accuracy in detecting potential problems did suffer.

Will sleeping pills help?

Experts say sleeping pills can help in some cases, but should be treated as a form of temporary relief. Regular use could make the insomnia worse and change normal sleep patterns.

Sleeping pills can also be unsafe if your insomnia is caused by certain health problems. Find out from your doctor if sleeping pills would be helpful and safe for you.

Most popular sleeping positions

A study published on May 1, 2007, by the Better Sleep Council of Canada — which represents more than 450 manufacturers, retailers and suppliers from the mattress industry — found that Canadians tend to prefer one of five different sleep positions:

  • Lying on the side with arms on the sides: Thirty-nine per cent of those surveyed chose this position. Lying on your side is recommended — as long as you maintain a slight bend in your legs.
  • Lying on the side with legs bent: Twenty-eight per cent of those surveyed said they slept in this most recommended position. Experts say if you sleep in this position, you should place a pillow between your knees to naturally support your hips and lower back.
  • Lying on the back with arms by the side: Fifteen per cent of those surveyed preferred this position.
  • Lying on the stomach: Eight per cent of Canadians surveyed preferred this position. Stomach sleeping is not recommended as it can cause stress for the lower back, neck and shoulders. A flat pillow under the hips and one under the head are recommended.
  • Lying on the back with arms by the head: Five per cent of those surveyed preferred this position. Sleeping on your back is a preferred position because it puts the least stress on your joints and back.

The Cleveland Clinic offers these tips for the best positions for lying down or sleeping:

  • Try to maintain the curve in your back (such as lying on your back with a pillow under your knees or a lumbar roll under your lower back, or on your side with your knees slightly bent).
  • Do not sleep on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach, especially on a saggy mattress, since this can cause back strain and can be uncomfortable for your neck.
  • Select a firm mattress and box spring set that does not sag. If necessary, place a board under your mattress.
  • Try a back support to help you feel more comfortable. Try tying a rolled sheet or towel around your waist.
